Questions
* A child raised his hand and asked, “Do you root for IU or Purdue?” I smiled at the question. I told him, “Purdue, because that is where my dad went to school.” The classroom was not aware that I (barely) graduated from the IU School of Business. I went on to explain why I root for Purdue. I said, “There will come a time in your life where it is more important to you that your parents are happier than you. It may be hard to see that at your age, but I promise you someday you will understand.” There was a short pause and he raised his hand again. “Yes?” Beaming, he stated, “My dad loves Purdue too!” *
* Are you from the south? I’m not from around here but your accent is peculiar. *
* After service one day, someone asked me, “Do you have to pay for the sermons you do?” Mouth gaping open, I asked, “What do you mean?” Stammering, the followup came, “You know…Do they…come from a service that you have purchase?” The sermon had a reference to Elmer J. Fudd. After reflecting on this exchange, I thought later, “I wonder if Gary Larson ever got that question?” *
* One little one asked me, “Why do you always carry a pen that’s sticking out of your pocket?” I told her, “Because, I learned from my past that you never know when you might need one.” She quickly moved on to the next subject, “Are those teeth real?” I said, “Yes.” She said, “Take them out and show me.” I laughed, “I can’t do that.” A statement of fact followed, “Grandpa does; I don’t see why you won’t!” *
I received this question twice from middle school students. I don’t recall my exact response, but I do remember that after explaining my answer, someone asked, “Well, what’s the answer?” Later, a young adult posed a similar question: “Is it sinful to listen to angry music?” My answer was undoubtedly guided by the Holy Spirit, as I didn’t think deeply before responding. However, I must acknowledge that my perspective may not be entirely accurate, as sin is defined as actions that separate us from God, and this definition can vary based on an individual’s emotional maturity and personal relationship with Christ. I stated, “If listening to that music prevents you from expressing your anger towards people, places, or things…it appears to me purposeful rather than a deliberate choice to sin.” *Reader* I would greatly appreciate your feedback on this matter if you have the time.
